Workshop Description
It is imperative for social workers to engage in conversations and trainings focused on dis/ability. The area of disability includes physical, mental, or developmental differences that often intersect with other identities, and impact multiple areas of peoples’ lives. For example Iin NYC, 25% of subway stations are accessible, Black and brown students are disproportionately labeled as “emotionally disturbed” on IEPs compared to white students, and only 35 percent of working-age people with dis/abilities were employed, compared with 74% of  those without dis/abilities. The presenter for this training will address key questions around dis/ability, such as: Wwhat does accessible really mean and who defines it; How does our understanding of race, gender, and class influence our understanding of ability; How do we understand power and powerlessness in the context of societal norms?  Using the tenets of critical dis/ability theory and the dis/ability justice framework, this workshop will describe dis/abilities, explore misconceptions about dis/ability, interrogate personal biases and co-create standards for more inclusive spaces and practices.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Define the components of Critical Dis/Ability theory
• Operationalize the tenets of Critical Dis/Ability theory
• Define and operationalize the Dis/Ability Justice Framework
• Describe ableism and its manifestation in practice

Presenter:

Leah Plasse, LCSW.  Leah (she/her) LCSW, is a white Jewish New Yorker, school social worker working with older adolescents in the South Bronx for over 10 years and an activist organizing since she was a teenager. She is invested in un/learning the multitude of ways social work upholds white supremacy and reinforces oppressive systems. Leah co-founded and facilitates the Mandated Reporters Against Mandated Reporting group and has facilitated workshops ranging from anti-racist trainings for white clinicians to abolitionist demands for equitable schools to Jews for a free Palestine. Leah Practices from an intersectional, anti-racist, anti-capitalist systems perspective that centers holistic community healing.
