Workshop Description

This workshop will focus on boundary issues and sexual transgressions, with specific focus on the challenges of social media, telehealth, and electronic boundaries and risk management strategies to address these complex areas. Specific standards from the NASW Code of Ethics related to these areas will be identified and discussed. Through small group discussion and activities, participants will have the opportunity to unravel the nuances associated with boundary violations. In addition, the presenters will provide vignettes for discussion on ethical dilemmas regarding boundary issues, and the complexity of electronic communication. 

 

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

•    Define the concept of boundary issues, and the differences between boundary crossings and boundary violations
•    Describe the difference between an ethical dilemma and an ethical issue
•    Identify the challenges associated with electronic boundaries including social media
•    Identify relevant standards from the Code of Ethics with respect to electronic boundaries
•    Identify relevant standards from the Code of Ethics with respect to sexual transgressions
•    Discuss risk management strategies.

This workshop is approved for 2.5 continuing education credit hours.

Professor Daria Hansen, PhD, LCSW-R, is is the Director of the BSW Program at Marist College and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. As an educator at the undergraduate level, she has taught across the social work curriculum and teaches an ethics course to senior BSW majors. In terms of social work practice, she and has worked with children, adolescents, families, and adults in community mental health settings, corrections, hospice, family preservation, and maintains a small private practice. She completed her MSW at Florida State University and her PhD in Social Work at Hunter College, Graduate Center.

Professor Virginia David, LMSW, faculty emerita in social work, Nazareth College of Rochester; over 40 years college/university teaching experience teaching across the social work curriculum at both the graduate and undergraduate levels; administrative experience as department chair; co-director of the collaborative MSW program, and BSW program director: previous co-chair of NASW-NYS ethics chapter ethics committee and current ethics committee member; developed graduate level social work ethics course on professional ethics, now required courses for all MSW students at Nazareth; received MSW from Syracuse University.
