Workshop Description

Participants will engage in a collaborative learning exchange, “The Ethics of Care: Moving Social Workers for Charity to Solidarity”. Through lecture and group discussion led by experienced community organizers, social work practitioners will consider internalization of the social work code of ethics, by considering models of the National Association of Black Social Workers and applying anti-racist systems theory as expressed by Ibram Kendi (and expanded by Dr. Jessica Pryce). Using this framework, participants will begin to evaluate if their workplace is racist, assimilationist or anti-racist and envision the steps needed to move towards co-powerment.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the orientation of their agency as racist, assimilationist or anti-racist.
  • Describe strategies to move towards anti-racist social work and practice
  • Apply professional code of ethics outside of their paid responsibility

This workshop is approved for 2.0 continuing education credit hours.

NASW-NYS is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers (Provider ID #0014), licensed mental health counselors (Provider ID #MHC-0053), licensed marriage and family therapists (Provider ID #MFT-0037) and licensed psychologists (Provider ID #PSY-0088).

Simone Akila (she/her/her) is a Black woman who loves Black people. She is a co-founder of Juneteenth Santa Barbara as well as Healing Justice Santa Barbara. She has led successful campaigns to center de-escalation and affirmation of life in Santa Barbara police use of force policies, secure monies for mental health positions instead of additional funding for law enforcement, establish city and county institutional support for Black cultural events, and to designate sites of Black Santa Barbara history as historical landmarks to protect them from gentrification. She currently is one of the driving forces behind the forming police oversight commission in Santa Barbara, an organizing effort spanning over 4 years.
