Workshop Description
It is imperative for social workers to practice self awareness and cultural humility in practice with clients from diverse membership groups. In this session, the instructor will provide an overview of Asian American history and about the origins of the term ‘Asian American’. Participants will gain knowledge about the ongoing movement for Asian American rights and develop a deeper understanding of how Asian American identity is tied closely to broader movements for civil rights. Once a foundation has been set, participants will apply the learning to their own identities and practices and tie their own perspectives and understandings with current events and how a recent wave of ‘anti-Asian hate’ has been coupled with a pervasive culture of anti-Blackness. The instructor will address how this has shaped various communities' responses and demands, and how practitioners can integrate a lens of cross-racial solidarity around these issues into their work.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the foundations of Asian American history, the origins of the term ‘Asian American’, and the movement for Asian American rights.

  • Explain how Asian American identity is tied closely to broader movements for civil rights

  • Explain how anti-Asian hate and anti-Blackness shapes individuals, communities, and systems in practice.

This workshop is approved for 2.0 continuing education credit hours.
