Workshop Description

This Panel will highlight the veteran perspective as clients in treatment. We will discuss intersectionality of veterans, military and civilian culture, as well as therapy culture and how that correlates, as well as areas for support. As important as mental health services are for the veteran community, they can be underutilized due to lack of understanding, education, and competency, as well as hesitance for veterans to reach out for support for a series of reasons including vulnerability, social isolation, denial, and anxieties regarding finding the right provider. Through a lived experience panel we will present information on how to bridge the gap between civilian clinicians and veteran clients and highlight areas where we can increase understanding of veterans seeking help.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar:

  • Participants will be able to discuss the veteran civilian divide.
  • Participants will be able to identify intersectionality of veterans including age, gender, branch of service, nature of service, sexuality, and other psychosocial factors.
  • Participants will learn new ways to support veterans clinically.
  • Participants will learn challenges that may present veterans as clients in treatment.
  • Participants will learn about what is most important to veterans seeking help, including resources, advocacy, support, validation, and best care practices.

This workshop is approved for 2.0 continuing education credit hours.
