Workshop Description

This presentation will look at the use of peer support interventions with veterans, their importance in connecting with and building community for veterans, and the evidence-based benefits of peer support services. We will discuss a peer support initiative, the Joseph P. Dwyer Program that provides peer support for veterans across New York state. We will focus on how veterans become connected with and benefit from this program. We will also explore the importance of cultural humility in social work when working with veterans. Social workers, especially those who are not veterans, should learn about and understand the value of peer support services, which can provide a non-stigmatizing, trusting environment where veterans can thrive.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the variety and complexity of veteran experiences and the challenges they may face. explain how peer support is helpful for veteran well-being (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health)
  • Determine when peer support is appropriate to incorporate into service planning
  • Define the difference between cultural competence and cultural humility regarding veteran experiences
  • Identify avenues to connect veterans with peer support in the community

This workshop is approved for 1.5 continuing education credit hours.
