Workshop Description

The requirement of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic has required clinicians who work with families and children/young adolescents to quickly improvise when switching to a telehealth setting. Therapists have had to either completely reinvision or modify what they were doing and what had been working on-site with little preparation, and few resources to guide them. This workshop will provide an additional resource for clinicians providing play-based therapy to children and young adolescents, who are seeking to strengthen the telehealth process and in doing so find additional strategies they can bring to the office.

In this webinar, participants will be able to see, through live demonstration, how sharing short animations, videos, and interactive power points as well as other collaborative activities such as bibliotherapy and feelings games can facilitate the goals of therapy. These activities work well in a telehealth setting but can also be brought on site. Examples of goals will come from the presenter’s own experience and will include emotional regulation, feelings expression, managing anxiety, improving self-esteem, and developing social skills. The types of interventions presented are designed for the less talkative, often distracted child, with low motivation for therapy. The ideas presented will often require the therapist to be able to share their computer screen and limited technical tips will be provided for this technology. This webinar will present participants with knowledge and tools that will inspire them to create their own play-based therapy interventions appropriate for telehealth and onsite sessions. Online resources will be provided for further study.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Utilize short animations and videos followed by discussion to facilitate the goals of a client’s treatment plan.
  • Develop interactive play-based activities for low motivated/ less talkative children.
  • Create didactive, visually expressive, and playful PowerPoints to teach and enhance skill building.
  • Enhance the practice of bibliotherapy with low motivated/less talkative children using PowerPoint formats.

This workshop is approved for 3.0 continuing education credit hours.
