Workshop Description

Social workers are aware that not everyone follows a linear pathway to gender identity formation. Individuals may experience a progression through several stages of gender awareness, exploration, expression and identity. Attendees will receive an overview of sexual identity and gender expression of gender diverse children. Case exploration will be used to illustrate differences between sexual orientation, gender identity and the developmental process children experience. This workshop frames transgender emergence as a normative process of identity development and challenges the view that gender variance is pathological. Clinical interventions that support these views are explored.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the therapeutic needs of transgender and gender diverse children
  • Evaluate the value of effective affirmative therapeutic tools used to assess transgender and gender diverse children
  • Apply clinical interventions that affirm and support transgender and gender diverse children.
  • Apply affirmative therapeutic interventions to support parents/caregivers of transgender and gender diverse children

This workshop is approved for 1.5 continuing education credit hours.
