9:00 AM - 10:15AM    Understanding the Impact of Childhood Sexual Abuse on Children and Adults

The symposium will open with an explanation of the long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) on survivors and the devastating effects on those close to them. Social and physical health, mental health, public health and economic issues will be addressed.

After this segment of the symposium, participants will be able to: 

  • Recognize the different forms of Childhood Sexual Abuse currently observed in practice.
  • Identify the short and long-term causes and effects that sexual abuse may have on a victim’s life and those close to them.
  • Recognize the objective characteristics and psychopathology of Childhood Sexual Abuse.
  • Identify the typical coping mechanisms of Childhood Sexual Abuse survivors.
  • Assess how developmental growth is affected by Childhood Sexual Abuse experience

10:30 AM - 12:00 PM   Neurobiology of Childhood Sexual Trauma
Maltreatment at any age can have long-term negative effects on a child’s brain development and function. This workshop will explain the effects of exposure to traumatic life experiences subsequent to childhood sexual abuse (CSA). This portion of the symposium will review the neurobiological problems associated with developmental trauma.

After this segment of the symposium, participants will be able to:

  • Construct a working understanding of the neurobiology of childhood sexual abuse
  • Recognize how sexual trauma affects emotions and behavioral presentations
  • Examine and explain the manifestation of developmental trauma
  • Analyze and differentiate between the neurobiology of abuse v neurobiology of neglect
  • Identify and assess the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) for use in practice.

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM The Impact of Childhood Sexual Abuse on Interpersonal Relationships in Adulthood
Research has shown that childhood sexual abuse increases the risk of interpersonal problems in survivors. These interpersonal problems include difficulties in parenting, problems in sexual and intimate relationships, lack of assertiveness, lack of trust, being socially inhibited and/or vindictive, difficulty in starting and sustaining relationships, and less skillful parenting. The outcome of interpersonal problems can result in a major economic crisis in the community and public health implications. This component of the will explain the relationship between Childhood Sexual Abuse and interpersonal problems.

After this segment of the symposium, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the prevalence of interpersonal problems in survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse.
  • Recognize how interpersonal difficulties are different in survivors who experienced intrafamilial CSA and extrafamilial CSA
  • Estimate the role disruption plays in the attachment process
  • Make observations about the impact of powerlessness and betrayal during CSA on adult interpersonal problems
  • Identify which type of treatment modality might help in improving satisfaction in interpersonal relationships among CSA survivors

2:45 PM - 4:00 PM    Evidence-Based Models of Recovery
This workshop will discuss effective first-line treatments needed for treating survivors of childhood sexual abuse and the important role they play in recovery, client improvement rates and decreased dropout from treatment. This workshop will explain the various evidence-based treatment approaches for the treatment of post-traumatic disorder in survivors of CSA. Treatment approaches to developmental trauma will also be reviewed.

After this segment of the symposium, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of using evidence-based practices with survivors of CSA
  • Examine current research supporting evidence-based practice in developmental trauma
  • Evaluate treatment outcomes for diverse groups
  • Analyze standardized means for determining the validity and effectiveness of specific evidence-based treatment methods for victims of CSA.
  • Construct Practice ready strategies and evidence-based techniques for treating CSA victims in adulthood

 

This workshop is approved for 6.0 continuing education credit hours.

Bernadette C. Marson, PhD, ACSW, LCSW-R specializes in mental health, sexual abuse, trauma, organizational management and relationship issues. She is on the faculty at SUNY Fredonia and a clinical consultant. Dr. Marson is the author of “Cyberdelity: Cyber-Infidelity, Uncomforted Trauma and Collaborative Marriage Survival” and the soon to be released “Relationships in Crisis: Childhood Sexual Abuse and Interpersonal Problems in Adulthood”.
