Degenerative neurologic processes like dementia and Alzheimer’s are often considered entirely separate from mental and behavioral health. However, the two fields can overlap in ways that many social work, mental health, and behavioral health staff are not prepared to face. This presentation will discuss the intersections between the behavioral health world and the dementia world. We will discuss presenting symptoms of degenerative neurologic processes that can look like mental health disorders, common dementia diagnoses that may occur in the behavioral health sphere, and how to screen for these conditions. Additionally, we will explore the interplay between trauma, memory loss, and dementia and provide best-practice recommendations for trauma informed dementia care for families and professionals.

Learning Objectives:

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Define dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Frontotemporal Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, and Vascular Dementia
  • Describe presenting symptoms of dementia that may look like a behavioral health condition
  • Recognize and use screening tools that can help differentiate a dementia from a mental health condition
  • Describe the relationship between trauma, memory loss and dementia
  • Demonstrate best practice interventions for working with clients with memory loss and trauma

This workshop is approved for 1.5 continuing education credit hours.
