This introductory workshop Implicit Bias: The Unconscious Threat to Equity will discuss and build towards a working definition of implicit bias that helps participants understand its impact in the real world. We will discuss how implicit bias manifests itself in varying personal and professional situations and the long term effects it can have on a personal and societal level. Participants will learn how they can measure their own implicit bias and learn techniques on how they can proactively reduce bias on a regular basis. 


Learning Objectives:

After the completion of this webinar, participants will:

  • Participants will recognize the 3 key components which make up implicit bias and construct a working definition for the term.
  • Participants will analyze how implicit bias impacts their personal lives.
  • Participants will evaluate 2 or more current professional practices which cause inequitable outcomes for themselves and their clients.
  • Participants will evaluate the five main implicit bias reduction methods, including X and integrate them into their professional work.

This workshop is approved for 1.5 continuing education credit hours.

Tibisay Hernandez, MS, PhD Candidate, is currently the Assistant Director for Employer Relations at the University at Albany. She is also a trainer for the National Training Institute on Race and Equity, who has conducted trainings for educators and administrators in various institutions in the Capital Region and New York City. Ms. Hernandez has a Master’s of Science degree in Curriculum Development and Instruction Technology, and is currently a doctoral candidate in the Education, Theory and Practice program at the University of Albany. Her research interests include first generation student support structures in Higher Education, issues of race and access in education, and the holistic preparation of teachers and administrators. Ms. Hernandez has worked in the areas of Early Childhood education for almost ten years before transitioning into Higher Education. She has served on various committees within the city of Albany and at her institution where she advocates for progressive initiatives geared towards combating inequities throughout the education system. She has received the 2016 Capital District YMCA Adult Achiever Award, the 2018 University at Albany Student Affairs Excellence Award for Diversity, and she is currently a SUNY Hispanic Leadership Institute Fellow. Ms. Hernandez is a very student and community centered administrator who volunteers her free time to mentorship and youth development.
