Workshop Description
The media often displays mental illness in a negative way, reinforcing stigma, and creating social divides. In turn, this discourages people from getting the help they need, promotes discrimination, limits opportunity, breeds misunderstanding, and damages self-image for those who struggle with mental health issues. The media has a tendency to sensationalize for the purpose of entertainment. Certain sub-groups in particular are often depicted in an overly dramatized and unrealistic way, such as individuals with mental illness, members of the LGBTQ population, Veterans, ethnic minorities, and individuals with Addiction. This workshop will cover examples of how these (and other) sub-groups are misrepresented, and how this may affect people from these respective sub-groups. Misconceptions based on media portrayals specifically regarding Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, and Depression will be outlined, with examples from film and television. Speaker will cover areas for improvement, that can help to reduce stigma and misunderstanding in the public eye. Derogatory language that is reinforced in the media will be discussed. Workshop will cover a cultural review of film, television, and news stories across eras spanning from the 1950’s to today. Speaker will define stigma, stereotype, discrimination, and disability. Workshop will outline 7 ways to reduce mental health stigma, including: open communication, education, language, equality, empathy, advocacy, and awareness.

After the completion of this webinar, participants will:

  • Participants will be able to define stigma, stereotype, and discrimination.
