Workshop Description
This workshop will cover the topic of “A Professional Model of Empathy,” in correlation to therapeutic and healthcare practices. Speaker will define dimensions of empathy, as they relate directly to social work practice and application of services across multiple settings and populations. Stigma and diagnosis will be discussed, as trends related to inherent assumptions and reactions when treating clients. Interactive activities will be facilitated, in order to process various steps to overcoming stigma. The difference between Empathy and Sympathy will be outlined in detail, allowing participants to explore their own case examples firsthand. A case study will be discussed in order to provide examples of transference, countertransference, and empathetic reactions. Case study will outline a client that presents an “empathy challenge”. Participants will then be asked to explore various case examples that present challenges, such as personality conflicts, diagnoses, countertransference, and unrelate-ability. Dimensions of Empathy will be carefully outlined as a 4-step process: Perceive, Understand, Experience, and Respond. The 8 skills of Empathy will be discussed: Curiosity, Authentic Listening, Repeating and Paraphrasing, Imagination, Open-Mindedness, Vulnerability, Self Awareness, and Sensitivity to Others’ Emotions. Boundaries and therapeutic connections will be discussed and explored. Participants will learn specific strategies for formulating and implementing empathy with clients and their family members.

  • Be able to define Empathy
  • Be able to list and describe the 4 aspects of Empathy
