Program Description
The ability to locate and secure funding for health and human service programming is an essential skill for social workers working in non-profit organizations today. This interactive program emphasizes strategies for identifying possible funding resources as well as tools for writing effective proposals. The session will cover the essential components of any grant application including problem statements, program design, budgets and budget narratives, evaluation, and sustainability plans. 

 

Learning Objectives
After the completion of this webinar, participants will:

1. Identify the different types of grant funding available to non-profit organizations;

2. Describe the nature of different funding requests and determine goodness of fit for a given project or program;

3. Craft problem statements and design social programs using various tools (e.g., box and whiskers, population funnel, logic models);

4. Develop effective budgets and accompanying budget narratives;

5. Describe their evaluation strategies and efforts to promote sustainability. :

This workshop is approved for 1.5 continuing education credit hours.


NASW-NYS is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers (Provider ID #0014), licensed mental health counselors (Provider ID #MHC-0053), and licensed marriage and family therapists. Diane R. Bessel, PhD,LMSW, CNM, currently serves as Assistant Professor and Program Director of the Social Work and Sociology Department at Daemen College. Prior to coming to Daemen College, she worked at the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County and Homeless Alliance of WNY where she was responsible for assessing community trends for the purposes of coordinated planning and decision-making. Bessel also evaluated the performance of 80+ programs and initiatives and provided capacity building trainings and technical assistance to local non-profit organizations. Over the course of her career, Bessel has secured more than $30 million in grant funds for a wide range of projects related to homelessness, poverty, economic self-sufficiency, and family violence. Bessel holds a Master of Arts and Doctorate in Sociology from the University at Buffalo. She also holds a Master of Science in Social Administration (MSSA) from the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Mandel Center.
