Workshop Description

It is imperative that social workers keep current on the latest trends in practice, advocacy, policy, management, ethics, and research in a variety of ways. One challenge for social workers in the field is in locating evidence-based research on issues of interest. The current Open Science movement has made more research publicly available than ever before, and there are many places to turn to obtain the latest findings. Attendees will learn about many free web sources beyond Google and Google Scholar with discussion on their strengths and limitations. In addition, NYS residents have free, remote access to many libraries with valuable databases and high-quality information. This training will demonstrate how to identify a research problem, locate information using these resources, and review various evaluative constructs to improve understanding of the material. By being an information literate social worker, we bolster professional knowledge and experience with new information that may lead to improved outcomes.

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the premise of Open Access research and what it means for access to evidence based research.
  • Identify key resources for social work evidence available freely on the web
  • Obtain access to the New York State Library and New York Public Library and access their resources remotely
  • Evaluate new information about clinical practice and other social work areas.

This workshop is approved for 4.0 continuing education credit hours.
