Workshop Description

This training focuses on stressors that Korean immigrant parents of children with ADHD experience in the face of both caregiving and acculturation and also their coping efforts to minimize those stressors and reduce their perceived stress. The training contents are based on a qualitative research study conducted on those Korean parents. Major themes reported by them in relation to their stressors and copings will be shared and discussed. The first section will go over the context around these Korean parents, study procedures, and discuss major themes regarding main stressors and their resulting impacts identified through their reports. The second section discusses their coping strategies and outcomes. In both sections of the training, direct quotes from their interviews that support those major themes will be introduced. In Q & A, all the contents covered in both sections will be discussed with participants.  

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Identify the challenges and dual struggles faced by Korean immigrant parents of children with ADHD and their ways of coping with stress
• Describe the mental health implications of Korean immigrant parents caring for children with ADHD, identified through empirical study.
• Demonstrate increased cultural literacy to aid in the helping process when working with Korean immigrant parents population group

Presenter:

Jinhee Koo, MSW, PhD candidate, is currently a PhD Candidate pursuing a doctoral degree from the School of Social Welfare at University at Albany, State University of New York. She obtained her BSW and MSW from the Pusan National University in South Korea. She has 9 years of practice experiences for people with mental disorders as a licensed clinical social worker in South Korea and 3 years of social work education as an adjunct professor at University at Albany. She also has 7 years of research experiences in the area of Asian population, mental health, child and family wellbeing, domestic violence, and social work services and education. Her current research interests involve stress and coping among Korean immigrant parents of children with ADHD, Asians’ acculturative stress and psychological wellbeing , and minority health disparity during the Covid-19. In particular, she developed and implemented a culturally modified education and support group program for Korean immigrant parents of children with ADHD in the U.S. and examined its effectiveness..
