Workshop Description

Health Insurance 101 will describe the basic knowledge of health insurance that social workers must possess and apply in practice to both serve their clients and benefit themselves. This training is best suited for both practitioners in private practice and also macro social workers who would like more insight into basic health insurance policies. This training will go over basic insurance information and differences, important questions to ask health insurance agents, a basic understanding on how health insurance policies differ, and information that should be included in billing. Additionally, this training will cover prior authorizations and who to contact for contracts at an insurance company. After this training is completed, participants will have a basic understanding of health insurance and its limitations which they can apply to their practices and helping clients. The training content will be disseminated through a variety of teaching modalities , including lecture, group discussion, and role play. 

 

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a basic understanding of different health insurance types and their limitations.
  • Ask important questions relevant to both their clients and themselves regarding health insurance.
  • Identify what information should be submitted in a claim, and apply this to their billing
  • Describe a health insurance agent’s role and limitations.
  • Understand basic health insurance terminology and apply this to their data collection on client’s benefit.

This workshop is approved for 1.5 continuing education credit hours.

Matthew Mackey, BA, is a MSW student at Adelphi University and has been a Family Advocate for an Insurance company for over 3 years. After having extensive training in insurance basics, Matthew has served families across America by advocating on their behalf, navigating the current insurance system, educating families who have children with special needs, and handling escalated and emergency situations. Xe is also a co-editor in chief of the student run journal, The Advocate at Adelphi, first publication to be in Spring 2021..
