Workshop Description

This webinar will provide an overview of the dynamics of gender-based violence in Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, emphasizing the unique challenges and barriers community members face when seeking services. There will be an emphasis on domestic violence and sexual violence across the lifespan, and the various ways trauma may manifest and/or be expressed in AAPI cultures and families. This webinar will go over the importance of a culturally responsive and trauma informed approach and utilize Womankind’s Moving Ahead Positively (MAP) model as a practice example.

Womankind’s culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and holistic work within a metropolis like NYC, has been essential in supporting immigrant survivors of violence. Womankind recognizes that trauma alters a person’s identity and trust; from survivors’ sense of safety and security, to the outlook of the world. This webinar distinguishes Womankind’s practice from traditional approaches that underscores survivors’ direct and immediate dealing with the trauma; processing painful memories; and working through feelings. Based on research and practice, this webinar offers perspectives on re-establishing survivors’ mind-body-soul connectedness, and its impact in the lives of survivors through showcasing healing modalities utilized in Womankind.  

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Identify forms of gender-based violence, particularly domestic violence and sexual violence.
• Recognize barriers and challenges that uniquely impact AAPI, immigrant and refugee populations.
• Apply a trauma-informed and culturally humble approach to their work with clients and communities.
• Identify and understand alternative healing modalities that emphasize mind-body-soul connections.

This workshop is approved for 2.0 continuing education credit hours.

Presenter:

Sasha-ann Frazer, LMSW, is a Licensed Social Worker and the Associate Director of Community Programs at Womankind. She has been working at Womankind for over 7 years in their Residential and Community Programs respectively. Sasha-ann identifies as an immigrant, Black woman, survivor and mother. Actively engaging with these various identities fuels her passion to support immigrant survivors of color. Sasha-ann hopes to always create spaces for these communities to be seen and heard, on their own time, with their own voice and through their own stories.

Reema Sharma , is Manager of Community Education and Outreach at Womankind. Her work includes engaging and educating community members about gender-based violence, particularly emphasizing cultural dynamics that tend to foster and perpetuate this violence. Reema has over five years of experience working with immigrant communities in NYC, both as a community organizer and an educator.
