Workshop Description

Cultural Humility has three major components: critical self-reflection, lifelong learning and institutional accountability. This model requires the practitioner to be flexible and curious to learn about clients experiences from clients, and to not assume that the diversity knowledge they hold applies to each client in the same way. This model also requires the practitioner to hold institutions accountable and to recognize implicit bias present. Cultural Humility highlights ongoing, learning and self-assessment regarding culture (our own and our interactions with others). It is different from other culturally-based training with its focus on self-humility and deep self-reflection (Tervalon and Murray –Garica, 1998). Through exploration of this topic, participants will be provide with information to accurately describe the three tenets of cultural humility. Additionally, participants will be able to enhance their culturally responsive practice and incorporate cultural humility into their clinical settings and will be able to recognize how cultural humility can address the power imbalances that present themselves within social worker or practitioner and client relationships.  

Learning Objectives

After the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Describe the tenets of cultural humility. 
• Discuss the use of cultural humility in clinical settings to enhance culturally responsive practice.
• Identify how culturally humility can assist in addressing power imbalances between the social worker and client.

Presenter:

Debra Fromm Faria, LCSW , is Clinical Associate Professor and coordinates the MSW Field Education Program and the Graduate Certificate in Gerontological Social Work at SUNY Brockport. She has administered federal, state and foundation training grants focusing on child welfare, gerontological social work, health and mental health services. Scholarship areas include field education, scholarship of teaching, collaborative interprofessional practice, international social work education and cultural humility. Professor Faria has served on a number of professional and advisory boards including: the National Advisory Board of the Council on Social Work Education's Gero-Ed Center, past president of National Association of Social Workers NYS Chapter (2012-2014), and CSWE Field Council. She served six years as a Commissioner for the Council on Social Work Education's Commission on Accreditation (2014-2019). Professor Faria currently serves on the following Boards of Directors: National Association of Social Workers (NASW) , State Society on Aging of New York, and Linkages of Rochester.
